1. Rhodes Town – where to stay in Rhodes for the first time

A waterfront view of a church tower in Rhodes, with surrounding buildings and a statue of a deer near the marinaA waterfront view of a church tower in Rhodes, with surrounding buildings and a statue of a deer near the marina

Rhodes Town is the island’s capital and a tourist hotspot. Situated at the Northern tip of the island, the town is a ferry port, so it’s easily accessible from many nearby islands – another thing it has going in its favor. The town Rhodes actually consists of 2 parts: Old Town and New Town, both with a distinct charm and a very lively and vibrant atmosphere

Let’s start with the Old Town, i.e., the Medieval City of Rhodes. Surrounded by stone walls, this historic spot has over 200 pedestrian-only cobbled streets and is home to many museums, palaces, and mosques – a haven for history lovers.

Some of the top sights in charming Old Town include the Sea Gate (map), the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, and, of course, the unmissable Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, also known as the Knights of Saint John, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Move on to the Mandraki Marina & Port (map) to see the Rhodes Windmills and the deer statues, the spot that was once dominated by a large statue of the sun god Helios, also known as the Colossus of Rhodes.

The Colossus of Rhodes took 12 years to build (294-282 BC), and it was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. It was once toppled over by an earthquake, but still remained in place. However, when Arabian armies raided Rhodes in 654 BC, they broke up the statue and sold the bronze it was made from.

Once you’re done exploring the historic beauty of Old Town Rhodes, head to New Town, recognizable for its modern buildings and numerous restaurants serving traditional Greek cuisine. Stop by Elli Beach (map), the town’s main beach, and bask in the sun during the day, but save some energy to experience the vibrant nightlife scene of Rhodes New Town.
