Let’s start our trip around this fantastic country in Southeast Asia with one of the most vibrant cities! A combination of ancient temples, skyscrapers, street markets, and malls, Bangkok is a vibrant city that you shouldn’t miss out on this trip! I have visited Bangkok numerous times and I always want to come back for more – I’m sure you’ll feel the same! 

Explore iconic landmarks like the Grand Palace and Wat Arun, or dive into the lively atmosphere of Khao San Road, famous for its nightlife, street food, and backpacker vibe. For a quieter escape, head to Lumpini Park, a green oasis in the heart of the city where you can relax or enjoy a peaceful stroll.

Food lovers will adore Bangkok’s countless food markets, serving everything from spicy curries to sweet mango sticky rice. And if shopping is on your list, you’ll find everything from luxury malls to unique finds at bustling markets like Chatuchak.

Bangkok is also the gateway to the rest of Thailand, with easy access to islands, mountains, and historic towns. By the way, domestic flights are frequent in Thailand and are also very affordable. 

Even if you’re continuing your trip to someplace else in Thailand, spend a couple of days here before moving on to your next destination. 

Public transportation is never a problem in the city! With its BTS metro system, buses, and boats, Bangkok does a pretty good job of helping tourists explore. The Grab app allows you to order a ride, rent a bike, or even summon a tuk-tuk! The tuk-tuks are a super popular way to get around the city – I recommend you give it a go!

Also known as Thailand’s cultural capital and the country’s 2nd largest city, Chiang Mai is a beautiful place where you can dive deep into the past of this place! The flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes a little over an hour, but you’ll feel like you’ve been instantly transported to another time and place.

FUN FACT: I actually started this website maaaany years ago in Chiang Mai, so I have many warm feelings towards the city!

Chiang Mai is located in the Northern part of Thailand and is surrounded by mountains, so the weather is a bit colder, and life is more affordable, which makes it a great spot for a longer stay in Thailand. 

Chiang Mai is one of the most beautiful cities in Thailand, so get ready to visit countless temples, eat delicious food in the many amazing restaurants, and explore all the markets! I recommend starting your adventure in the Old City, one of the best areas to stay in Chiang Mai and home to the top attractions in the city.

PRO TIP: If you’re planning a longer stay in Chiang Mai (let’s say for a month), I recommend staying in Nimmanhaemin (Nimman for short) – this is where I lived, and I loved it. It’s trendy, modern, and offers a lot to do!

There’s something to do in Chiang Mai for everyone, from fabulous clubs to night markets, but its temples are surely some of the most amazing ones in the country!

I recently visited and I am definitely coming back for more!

The island is known for its stunning beaches like Chaweng and Lamai, with soft sand and clear waters ideal for swimming or lounging. For a quieter escape, Maenam Beach and Silver Beach offer a more peaceful atmosphere.

Beyond the beaches, Koh Samui is full of cultural and natural highlights. Don’t miss the iconic Big Buddha Temple, the scenic Na Muang Waterfalls, or the unique Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks, a fascinating natural formation.

If you are flying out of Koh Samui, you will enjoy their airport, trust me, it is very special! There are no walls – and it’s surrounded by lush green nature. Plus, they have these really cute trains instead of the regular airport shuttles, and the airport provides some free snacks and drinks! Have you seen that anywhere? Talking about those 6$ water bottles!

The island has something for everyone: families, couples, or tourists who want to enjoy Koh Samui’s natural, untouched side.

6. Pai – best place to stay in Thailand on a budget

Situated a 3-hour drive North of Chiang Mai and a little over an hour by plane from Bangkok, Pai is a beautiful and relatively small town with a chill and hippie vibe, making it any backpacker or a budget traveler’s dream come true!

Why? Well, for starters, the hotels are super cheap here, and there are also lots of hostels tucked away between the hills and rice paddies of Pai town. 

I visited Pai for a day – that’s what most people do! However, I highly recommend you stay overnight to avoid 2 flights in one day or to rest from the long and winding drive from Chiang Mai. 

NOTE: The distance between Chiang Mai and Pai is just 129 km (80 miles), but the drive takes 3 hours. This route is famous for its many turns – 762 turns, to be exact! This is one of the most dangerous routes in Thailand, so you need to be extremely careful if you’re driving – and definitely avoid it if you suffer from motion sickness. 

A few years ago, only tourists who wanted to go off the beaten track came here, but recently, that has changed, and now many eco-resorts and places want to help the local community and their lands here in Pai. 

And I hope you’re outdoorsy because there are many hiking trails here and even some hot springs, plus many other fun things to do in Pai.

PRO TIP: Bring your yoga mat or borrow one, as you’ll come across many unique places and studios where you can practice!

You can explore Bottle Beach or Haad Yuan, two of the most serene and beautiful beaches, perfect for relaxing or soaking up the sunset. For nature lovers, there are hidden waterfalls, lush jungle trails, and incredible snorkeling spots.

Koh Phangan is also a hub for wellness, with yoga retreats, meditation centers, and holistic healing courses. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a wellness escape, Koh Phangan has so much to offer beyond the party scene.

Even if you’re not such a party person, I still recommend coming here if you’ve got the chance! There are countless amazing areas to stay in Koh Phangan, especially along the island’s West and North coasts, plus incredible waterfalls, jungles, and even a national park! 

I stayed in the Northern part of Koh Phangan, and I really liked the vibes – it was super chill and just the perfect place to relax. However, if you’re staying here and want to check out the Full Moon Party, you’ll need some sort of transport to go across the island. I had a bike, but renting a car is also a great way to get around the island. 

TIP: Make sure to do some beach hopping and see as many beaches as you can; to me, each one seemed more beautiful than the last. Also, stay on the beach for the sunset or wake up early and catch the sunrise – it’s incredibly beautiful!!

Chiang Rai is a charming city in northern Thailand, perfect for those who love culture, history, and natural beauty. It is about 3h driving from Chiang Mai or 1,5h drive from Bangkok.

It’s best known for the stunning White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), a unique and intricate masterpiece that looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale. Another must-visit is the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), with its vibrant colors and serene atmosphere.

For something truly special, head to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. You can also explore local markets and enjoy traditional northern Thai cuisine.

Firstly, it’s packed with scenic rice and tea fields (you’ll see many farmers around), forests, and jungles. You can find most of them in the beautiful Doi Luang National Park. And let’s not forget about the wildlife – you can even see elephants here!

Anyone who loves nature will feel in their element here! And what’s even better is that you can also get a taste of urban life if you just head to the city center and explore around. You’ll find great restaurants, bars, and unique street art, too. 

Besides the main temple, there are a few more colorful temples, which I think you should check out, like Wat Rong Suea Ten and Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong! There’s also the Baan Dam Museum, also known as the Black House Museum.
