Here’s a map to help you visualize the Jackson Hole areas I will be talking about in this post:
1. Jackson – where to stay in Jackson Hole for the first time
The historic town of Jackson, the main town in the valley, is perfect for anyone looking for a well-rounded experience while visiting the Jackson Hole area in Wyoming! Jackson has a very quaint atmosphere and offers a unique combination of urban amenities and natural beauty.
The focal point of the town is Jackson Town Square (map), a historic square that features elk antler archways at each corner. The square is surrounded by various shops, bars, and restaurants, so you’ll have plenty of places to add to the agenda once you snap photos of the famous antlers.
PRO TIP: if you’re in Jackson for Christmas, don’t miss out on the Town Square Tree Lighting, as well as the daily Santa visits – your kids can meet Santa almost every day in December between 5 and 7 p.m.
Besides its numerous attractions, including museums, rodeos, and its historic town square, Downtown Jackson also offers easy access to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, so expect to encounter a lot of travelers!
If you’re visiting during the ski season, you’re one lucky traveler! The Snow King Mountain Resort (map) is located right here in town and the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (map) is just a short drive away near Teton Village (which I will talk about shortly). It’s the perfect place for anyone looking for some fun winter activities during their holiday.
TIP: if you’re staying in the town of Jackson, you can use the START bus to get around town; the town shuttle is free of charge and can take you to various locations within the town. However, there’s also a shuttle to Teton Village, Wilson, and Star Valley, and this is a paid service, with prices ranging from US$1 to US$8 per ride. But if you want to explore Grand Teton National Park, I highly recommend you rent a car and enjoy the scenic drives.
Don’t worry though, the summer months also offer plenty of outdoor activities! One of my favorites is the National Elk Refuge (map), where you can spot one of the largest elk herds in the world! You’ll also find lots of parks and if you’re looking for restaurants then check the town square within walking distance of most hotels. Sounds like the perfect mix to me!

3. Wilson – where to stay in Jackson Hole on a budget
Wilson is a super small town situated 7 miles (11 km) from the town of Jackson, with a more laid-back atmosphere and a better offering of more affordable accommodations. This is the perfect place to stay if you’re traveling on a tight budget or you want to be further away from the hustle and bustle of Jackson and Teton Village.
As I mentioned, this is a very small town, so there’s not too much to see and do in your spare time, i.e., whenever you’re not exploring Jackson or Grand Teton National Park. However, I don’t mean this as a bad thing – Wilson is one of the best places to stay in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to relax and truly rest.
If you’re traveling with kids, then I recommend you visit the Teton Raptor Center, where you can attend a live bird experience and learn more about the raptors that are an important part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Seeing as Wilson is not a very upscale destination, you won’t find any high-end restaurants and bars. But if you’d still like to dine here and meet some of the locals, then you have to spot by for a meal at Nora’s Fish Creek Inn (map), and The Stagecoach Bar (map) is another great spot to grab a drink or a snack while enjoying live music.
However, if you’re staying here, you’ll likely want to spend some more time in nature, and you won’t be disappointed. There are plenty of hiking trails nearby, so you can easily spend the stunning nature surrounding the town.

4. Grand Teton National Park – where to stay in nature
Located 5 miles (8 km) North of Jackson and 17 miles (25 km) Southeast of Teton Village, the Grand Teton National Park is the place to immerse yourself in nature, It offers spectacular views of the mountains, fjord-like lakes, beautiful wildlife sanctuary, and many outdoor activities, in a very relaxed and serene environment.
There’s something to do in Grand Teton National Park for any kind of traveler! I’m guessing we all love exploring the scenic hiking trails, and who knows, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to spot an elk or a moose. There are also a lot of fishing-friendly spots in the park if you’re into that activity.
The park has 3 entrances: Granite Canyon, Moose, and Moran. If you’re staying in Jackson or coming from that direction, the Moose entrance is the way to go, although the Moran Entrance provides easier access to Jackson Lake and Colter Bay.
If you’re traveling in your car to the park, I highly recommend taking some of the most scenic drives here, like the Jenny Lake drive! If you don’t have your own car, I highly recommend renting one for this adventure!
For more information on each of the entrances, scenic drives, fees, and more, check out the park’s official website.
Many tourists choose to stay in towns near the national parks when it comes to accommodations as they generally have more options and facilities. In this case, you could look for hotels in Jackson or Teton Village, but if you want to stay inside the park or right near it, then here are the best 3 places, closest to the Moran entrance.
NOTE: the lodges recommended below are slightly lower-rated than the accommodations I usually recommend, but seeing as you’ll be staying inside a national park, the options are somewhat limited, and you can’t expect to get the same amenities as in a hotel in an urban area.
- Jackson Lake Lodge – this lodge provides stunning views of Teton Mountain and features 3 restaurants, an outdoor swimming pool, a gift shop, and barbecue facilities. Each cottage at this lodge has wooden furnishing and an en suite bathroom stocked with free toiletries.
- Jenny Lake Lodge – this historic lodge offers cottages with custom wood furnishings and a private patio. Guests are also offered a daily gourmet breakfast, lunch, and nightly five-course dinner, as well as horseback trips to the park!
- Colter Bay Village – situated on the shore of Jackson Lake, this lodge features an on-site restaurant, a grocery market, and barbecue facilities. Some of the cottages at this lodge have en suite bathrooms, and others have access to shared bathrooms.
Things to do in Grand Teton National Park
- Go out to the Oxbow Bend viewpoint (map) and enjoy the view of Mount Moran
- Enjoy some fly fishing on the Snake River and admire the scenic lake views
- Take your car and head to see the Jenny Lake scenic drive
- Admire the views from the Jackson Lake Dam (map)
- Take some photos of the stunning landscapes at Schwabacher Landing (map)
