1. Downtown Houston – where to stay for the first time
If you’re visiting Houston for the first time and can’t decide where to stay, Downtown is the ultimate choice. This part of the city is bustling with life and offers an abundance of attractions, restaurants, and sports arenas, so you can be sure there won’t be a boring moment during your stay!
Downtown Houston is the city’s business district, recognizable for the tall skyscrapers and hectic traffic, but it’s actually much more than that! Within the Downtown area, you’ll also find some smaller neighborhoods that are anything but business!
The East Downtown (EaDo) area is home to the Shell Energy Stadium (map), where the Houston Dynamo faces its soccer opponents. In this area, you’ll also find bars, breweries, and street art. However, if sports aren’t your thing, you can head to the Theater District and attend a performance at one of the 9 theater venues.
The Theater District is also home to one of the city’s top attractions – the Downtown Aquarium. At the aquarium, you’ll see a variety of marine animals, a shark tank, and even touch pools that allow you to see the animals up close!
If you’re into green spaces, you cannot miss Discovery Green (map), an urban park where you can enjoy live music, fitness facilities, and a magical ice skating rink in wintertime!
If you’re coming to Houston for a basketball or a baseball game, or even a concert, Downtown is THE place to stay. The Toyota Center (map) is home to the Houston Rockets, the city’s NBA team, but it also hosts most of the major concerts, while Minute Maid Park (map) is a baseball stadium that hosts the home games for the Houston Astros.
In case you’re into sports, theater, or even spending time outdoors, there’s still plenty to do Downtown. The dining scene is very rich and diverse and the shopping opportunities seem to be endless.
Best of all, the Downtown is well-connected to the rest of the city, so you can just hop on the red line (Houston’s METRORail) and go wherever you like in the city.
Finally, regardless of where you’re staying in Houston, you absolutely have to visit the Space Center Houston! This science museum is the top attraction in the city – it covers the history of space exploration and has some very cool exhibits (from space!). And you might even get to meet an astronaut!

Compared to Downtown, Montrose is a smaller neighborhood and doesn’t boast as many attractions (unless you count bars). However, The Menil Collection is a must-visit art museum during your stay here.
Another cool landmark is the Rothko Chapel (map) that features abstract murals by artist Mark Rothko. And if you need a break, Buffalo Bayou Park (map) is a great place to relax and unwind.

Are you a shopping addict and your budget isn’t much of a concern? Then you’ll fall in love with Galleria/Uptown, situated a 25-min drive West of Downtown Houston! This upscale neighborhood has a buzzing atmosphere and is one of the best areas in Houston if you’re there for a vacation filled with activities.
Here, you find the largest shopping center in Texas, The Galleria (map), which attracts more than 26 million people every year. This popular tourist spot has over 300 stores, including luxury brands such as Versace, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and many more! But this is not just a mall – it hosts a skating rink, 2 huge swimming pools, and many restaurants.
A short walking distance from The Galleria, you’ll come across the Water Wall (map), an impressive artificial waterfall – be sure to snap some photos!
When you want to get back in touch with nature, head to Memorial Park (map), located on the neighborhood’s Eastern border. This lush and expansive park is a great place for a picnic or a relaxing stroll. But you can also visit the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, especially if you’re traveling with kids.
The Galleria/Uptown neighborhood is not too big, so you can walk between the main attractions. If you do decide to drive, keep in mind that traffic is bad, and you might lose some time waiting in traffic. NOTE: The traffic in Houston is generally bad, so driving can be stressful. That’s why it’s important to choose the best location to stay in Houston, where you’ll have easy access to public transport – a safe and reliable way to get around the city. As you might have guessed from the name, the area is home to the Texas Medical Center – you probably won’t need that! But a good portion of this area is taken up by Hermann Park (map), which is home to the Houston Zoo, which I’m sure will be a fan-favorite among the kids.
Another thing kids will absolutely love is the Hermann Park Railroad (map), an amusement ride that will take you around the park, while adults can have just as much fun at the Hermann Park Golf Course (map).
Besides the attractions in Hermann Park, there’s not much to do in the Medical Center area. Luckily, you’ll be super close to Downtown, and also this is one of the best places to stay in Houston if you’re visiting for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (map).
The Houston Rodeo is an annual event that takes place over 20 days, usually in March and hosts various events. The event location is less than a 10-min drive from the Medical Center area, so it’s a great idea to stay here.
