El Barrio, or Old Town, is the best place to stay for first-timers. It’s centrally located near the beach and has wonderful cultural sights and nightlife!

1. El Barrio (Old Town) – where to stay in Alicante for the first time
El Barrio is the name of the historical Old Town of Alicante. This is a great place to dive into the culture and past of this town and enjoy its charm! The Old Town offers cultural attractions during the day and a vibrant nightlife once the sun sets, making it an ideal place to stay for first-time visitors!
This is a triangular area that spreads between Rambla de Mendez Nunez in the West (map, on the other side is El Centro, the City Center), Esplanada de Espana (map, the main boulevard) in the South, and Mount Benacantil (map) in the East.
NOTE: Casco Antiguo, El Barrio, Barrio de la Santa Cruz, Old Town – these names all refer to the same place, the Old Town of Alicante!
The main attractions here include the Santa Barbara Castle (map) on Mount Benacantil (166 m or 544 ft high). This is an old castle dating from the 9th century and founded by the Moors, and it offers breathtaking views of Alicante!
PRO TIP: You can take an elevator to climb to the top of Santa Barbara Castle and then walk around. The entry to the castle is free, but you have to pre-book the tickets for the lift. Check the official website for details.
Also don’t miss the central beach of Playa del Postiguet (map, €18 for a sunbed and umbrella, beware of pickpockets) and the Town Hall (map) with a statue of Dali. Of course, the old, notable churches like Iglesia de Santa Maria (map) and San Nicolas Cathedral (map) are a must-visit!
Between the Old Town and City Center (and just by the beach) you’ll find the marina with nice hotels, restaurants, and museums all around it!
And in terms of food, let’s not forget about the amazing tapas bars you’ll find in El Barrio!
You can walk from any point in El Barrio to other central areas like El Centro, Mercado, or Ensanche Diputacion in less than 20 minutes! Everything is nearby and very walkable.

2. El Centro (City Center) – where to stay in Alicante for nightlife
Cross Rambla Street from El Barrio or walk along the Marina, and you’ll be in El Centro soon! This fun, vibrant, and beautiful area is the heart of modern Alicante and it’s a great place to base yourself for urban city hopping and nightlife.
Basically most of sightseeing in the City Center of Alicante consists of walking the notable streets (they’re all very lively and walkable), enjoying the architecture, and visiting museums and galleries of interest.
The center of nightlife activity is in and around Castanos Street (map), with endless bars, pubs, and restaurants on every corner! By the way, if you want to get some decent sleep during the weekend, definitely avoid accommodation on this street!
The very center of Alicante is also a paradise for shoppers. You’ll find designer shops all around pretty much all the streets parallel to the sea! Calle del Teatro (map) is the main shopping area.
Of course, if you’re into boat trips, jet ski sessions, or other marine-related activities, you can do them all from here! As I said, the Marina is basically split between the Old Town and City Center.
NOTE: For more shopping and (slightly more affordable) accommodation options, you can also check the Ensanche Diputación neighborhood that’s basically a continuation of El Centro to the West.
GETTING AROUND: Trams and buses connect Alicante’s inner neighborhoods as well as other cities in the Alicante province. Buy a TRAM card at the tram ticket machine for more convenient travel (works on bus + tram). Uber and Cabify are the main ride-hailing services, but they’re not any cheaper than taxis. They’re just more reliable since you get a fixed price beforehand. Personally, I recommend trams (or Cabify if you absolutely need a taxi).

3. San Juan Playa – best place to stay in Alicante for beach fun
Located 10 km (6 mi) Northwest of central Alicante and 20 km (12 mi) from the airport, this area is perfect for travelers who want to spend most of their time sunbathing and playing volleyball on the sandy beaches!
San Juan Beach is the most popular beach destination in Alicante and one of the best places to stay in the city. You won’t have time to get bored here, as there’s always something to do, whether it’s playing some type of beach sport or drinking in the beach bars at night!

Surf schools, kayaking, and windsurfing, all these cool activities will be waiting for you at San Juan Beach. Most of them are located within walking distance from each other so you don’t even have to walk for too long to find them. Alternatively, you can hit the Alicante Golf (map) course if you’re a player.
The central street here, Avenida de la Costa Blanca (map), is filled with international restaurants, cafés, bars, and accommodation. This is also where major bus and tram lines go by in case you want to make it to El Barrio or El Centro quickly!
By the way, everything South of this main avenue is actually part of the Cape Huertas area, another great area to stay that I’ll discuss below.

The Mercado area centers around the Central Market of Alicante (map), one of the city’s top attractions and the main grocery shopping spot for locals.
The market is located an easy walk from both the Old Town and City Center (less than 10 minutes), and it’s considered the gastronomy hub of Alicante. Stay here if you’re into food tasting or if you want to experience the essential Spanish culture of living.
Mercado is an amazing place to stay for local experiences. I found so many different cooking workshops from tapas classes, paellas, sangria workshops, to anything your heart desires. I’m sure when you see the offer, you won’t know which one to take (check the things to do section below for links)!
Alicante’s Central Market area spans across 11,000 square meters and has over 300 stalls!
This area is the best place to experience the Spanish tardeo. Although it lacks translation in English, it basically means to live it up in the afternoon instead of at night. People will gather for tapas, sip drinks, and just chill around like they have 0 worries in the world! If I was coming to Alicante, I’d have my own tardeo at the Mercado on Day 1!
Apart from the bustling vibe, this area offers stunning architecture and some really cool attractions like the Beer Spa (map).
Do note that no luxury hotels are available in Mercado. This is a residential area and most of the accommodation is apartments or hostels anyways.

5. Cape Huertas – where to stay in Alicante for families
Located 7 km (4 miles) East of the Old Town of Alicante, this residential neighborhood is the best holiday destination spot for families traveling to the city! It’s near the best beach area, has plenty of family-friendly activities, and the noise pollution is minimal at night!
Here, the beaches are in their natural state and less crowded than in Postiguet. Plus, the views of the Mediterranean are simply stunning, and who doesn’t love a good view?
Cape Huertas (or Cabo de las Huertas in Spanish) is also a great place to stay in Alicante if you’re a nature lover and don’t care about staying in the City Center or being close to the main attractions. Don’t get me wrong, I love cities, but sometimes I prefer these tranquil spots.
Most attractions in the area include hiking trails, beaches, and some coves you can explore. I’m sure that everyone, from the kids to the adults, will be happy to participate in the family-friendly outdoor activities in this coastal destination in Spain!
Since not many tourists prefer this neighborhood as their holiday spot, the prices of the hotels and restaurants here are much lower than in the Old Town, which is another plus if you have a big family!

6. Albufereta – best place to stay in Alicante for history
Located 5 km (3 miles) East of El Barrio in Alicante, this neighborhood is another great place to explore the historical part of the city during your trip! Albuferata is believed to be a former Roman Harbor, and some ancient settlements were even discovered here! Staying here will give you enough time to explore the place’s ancient history.
One of the biggest attractions in Albufereta is the Lucentum ruins of Tossal de Manises (map), one of the most important archeological sites in Alicante. These ruins date back to the 4th century B.C. when the Roman Empire occupied land in the Iberian Peninsula. I’m sure all my history lovers will book their hotels in this destination ASAP!
There’s also Albufereta Beach (map), where you’ll mostly find local people, which is the best-case scenario for travelers who aren’t fans of the crowds! And you’ll be happy to know this isn’t your everyday beach! It has an EU Blue Flag certification, meaning it’s famous for its cleanliness and safety.
Featuring some stunning views of the Mediterranean sea, amazing historical local attractions, cool restaurants, and located just 19 km away from the Alicante Airport, this destination is an awesome place to stay in Alicante!
Best of all, a quick tram connection will take you to the city center in around 15 minutes! So if you’d rather stay by a less crowded yet beautiful beach (but still enjoy nice restaurants), definitely consider Albufereta.

Most of these cities have a tram connection with Alicante city, but there are also buses and regional trains for ones that are further away. You could also rent a car for more flexibility, but I don’t recommend it for getting around Alicante (the city) since everything is super walkable.
