Art can transform communities, enhance our travels, and give us insight into a city’s personality. So, we set out to find the most remarkable art experiences across the United States: the best art museums, immersive experiences, sculpture parks, arts districts, small-town art scenes, and cities for street art.
A panel of experts made nominations across six art-filled categories, then we asked our readers to vote for their top picks — and the results are in.

Best Art Museum: Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio

Public and free of charge since 1901, the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) encompasses 37 acres of land and features a collection of over 30,000 pieces of art. This global museum has over 40 galleries of rotating and permanent exhibits which highlight local art and foster community education. TMA also displays key paintings by Frans Hals, El Greco, and Claude Monet, and a garden full of pieces by sculpture artists like Alexander Calder and Deborah Butterfield.

Best Arts District: Dallas Arts District in Dallas, Texas

Covering 118 acres of Downtown Dallas’ northeastern corner, the Dallas Arts District is the largest contiguous urban arts district in the nation. This neighborhood has more buildings designed by Pritzker award-winning architects than anywhere else in the world. Among its many museums, galleries, and performance halls are the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, Crow Museum of Asian Art, Winspear Opera House, and the Meyerson Symphony Center.

Best City for Street Art: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Mural Arts Philadelphia was founded in 1984 to empower professional and young Philadelphia artists to showcase their talents. Since then, the organization has produced more than 4,000 murals, many of which are still on display. A highlight is the ongoing Love Letter project, a series of 50 rooftop murals visible from the Market-Frankford elevated transit line.

Spanning 158 acres in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park hosts outdoor gardens and a five-floor, 15,000-square-foot tropical conservatory. The permanent sculpture collection features more than 200 works, many of which are displayed in the sculpture park.

Best Small Town Arts Scene: Vermillion, South Dakota

Vermillion is a small town in southeast South Dakota and home to University of South Dakota. Artist’s studios, galleries, and museums are abundant, including the recently-opened, fully-renovated National Music Museum. Vermillion’s streets are filled with sculptures and massive murals, which are part of the ongoing Vermillion Community Mural Project.
