Situated at the southernmost tip of New Jersey, Cape May is known for its picturesque Victorian architecture, great restaurants, charming hotels, and stunning beaches. As a frequent visitor, I’ve experienced this award-winning coastal small town in all seasons.
Having ranked among the 10 best beaches in New Jersey and the 10 best beaches in the Northeast, the best time to visit Cape May is summer, the area’s high season. But if you stick around for the cooler months, Cape May transforms into an idyllic fall retreat — with less crowds!
How to get to Cape May
To get to Cape May, take Exit 0, the south end of the Garden State Parkway, which runs along the coast of New Jersey. If you’re driving from points north, take this highway to the end of the line. If you’re coming from Delaware, take the Cape May – Lewes Ferry to the town (and you can bring your car along, too). Be sure to make reservations.

History and architectural tours
In the fall, the streets of Cape May feature vivid autumn colors, as the mature trees and shrubs create a beautiful backdrop for leisurely strolls and bike rides where visitors can admire the town’s incredible Victorian architecture.
Take intriguing tours showcasing historic homes, the Cape May Lighthouse, and other unique structures. Hop on the Cape May Trolley for a fun sightseeing experience that takes riders around the entire town for an excellent overview of the area.
If you prefer a small group tour, sign up for a fascinating Backstreets and Byways City Tour. This electric cart tour explores Cape May’s maritime and agricultural roots and some under-the-radar spots in the less-busy parts of town. An experienced local guide runs these tours and covers a lot of ground, stopping at historic homes, the war memorial, the Coast Guard station, and other off-the-beaten-path places.

Book a tour of the remarkable Emlen Physick Estate, built as a home for an affluent family during the Victorian era. The nearly 20-room mansion is an architectural marvel and today offers small-group, private tours. It is truly a step back in time. Cape May beaches, birding and family fun

With slightly cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, fall is the ideal time to enjoy a relaxing day at the beach and other outdoor activities. The kids are back in school, and the beaches are much less busy. Bring your beach chairs and soak in the solitude. Usually, at this time of year, the ocean temperature is still warm enough for a quick dip. Walk or run along the boardwalk and check out the rustic views of the dunes and the town. At the day’s end, stroll to sunset beach and enjoy the colorful sky.
It’s also the optimal time of year to take advantage of the outdoors with exceptional birdwatching, as Cape May is one of the world’s top birding destinations. You can spot birds and other seashore wildlife by exploring the Cape May Bird Observatory and stroll along the scenic coastal trails, or embark on a Salt Marsh Safari on The Skimmer, one of the best boat tours in the U.S. and known for its incredible birdwatching opportunities.

Another fun autumn outdoor activity is the rail-bike tour with Revolution Rail Company, a family-friendly ride along the four-mile train track that brings guests to the Nature Conservancy’s Garrett Family Preserve. Riders learn about local history and get an up-close look at the expansive wetlands of the shore region.

Cape May hosts various fall festivals and events, including the exquisite monthly Beach Plum Farm Moon Dinner Series. Each dinner is a wonderful, unique event on the full moon of every month. It’s an extraordinary dining experience with a farm-to-table multi-course menu featuring vegetables and fruit grown on the farm and other locally sourced ingredients. Conversation is encouraged, as attendees are seated outdoors at long tables filled with colorful blooms surrounded by tranquil gardens. Beach Plum Farms also offers Thanksgiving and holiday dinners.
Other major fall events include the Cape May Harvest Brew Fest, Cape May Oktoberfest, Cape May Wine Trails, and Cape May Restaurant Weekend.

With its abundance of fresh seafood and talented chefs, Cape May is known as a haven for food lovers, as it’s home to many fantastic restaurants, ranging from upscale gourmet landmarks to casual beachfront cafes. No matter where you choose to dine in Cape May, you’ll be treated to a culinary experience showcasing the best the town offers. Fall is the prime fishing season in Cape May and visitors can indulge in delicious seafood dishes at various excellent restaurants around town.
For a classic Cape May dining experience, head to The Blue Pig Tavern, a charming restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with fresh seafood specialties like lobster mac and cheese and seared scallops. The Washington Inn, situated in a restored 1840s home, is another top choice for upscale dining. Here, guests can enjoy dishes like crab cakes and filet mignon in an elegant setting.

History buffs should book a stay at Congress Hall, which dates back to 1816 and claims to be the oldest resort in the United States. Ranked among the 10 best historic hotels in the country, guests love Congress Hall’s sprawling swimming pool area, the sophisticated lobby bar, and picture-perfect beach cabanas. Be sure to book a treatment at the hotel’s Sea Spa.
In the middle of Cape May, The Virginia Hotel & Cottages is a quaint boutique property offering hotel rooms and charming guest cottages. The on-site restaurant, Ebbitt Room, serves a farm-to-table menu with ingredients sourced from the property’s Beach Plum Farm.
For those seeking a family-friendly (and pet-friendly!) hotel that’s walkable to everything, The Beach Shack is a sure bet. This fully renovated property that began as a motor inn is also home to the Rusty Nail, a quintessential surfer bar and restaurant. Kids’ meals are served up on souvenir Frisbee plates. As the temperatures drop, cozy up to the restaurant’s indoor fireplace.
