There’s no need to leave the little people at home, if you’re considering a Barcelona getaway. This is one city that’s very well equipped to show kids the time of their lives. It’s the perfect city to infuse a touch of culture and history into the mix in a way that’s interesting and thought provoking. From the many museums including the Chocolate Museum and the Ideas Museum, both of which have play areas for children and are extremely entertaining, to the outdoor parks and cable car rides, such as the one that leads up to Montjuic, Barcelona has a ton of activities for the young and the old-er. A particularly fun way to spend an afternoon is to explore the Labyrinth. This park is comprised of windy bushes, and maze like tree formations which provide for endless hours of running, searching and playing hide and seek. It’s also slightly outside of the city center, so a nice way to see another part of town. If you want to have a picnic in a beautiful setting, check out either Park Guell or Ciutadella Park, both of which are ideal for relaxing with some sandwiches and a good book while the kids can run around, feed the swans and play on Gaudi’s Modernist dragons.

Barcelona’s newly opened Museum of Ideas and Innovation is amazing. This new centre for inspirational designs and inventions, is a creative and fun place for children and family of all ages. The Museum is divided into five collections including a corner for useless but entertaining inventions. There is also a Limitless Society collection you’ll find new ideas from individuals as well as companies and if you’re looking for fun and practical check out the Reflectionarium. There’s also a lower level with other exhibits so don’t forget to check that out. The best part is that this museum has a kids zone, with cushions where kids can submit their own designs of their own inventions. The best idea of the month is patented.
Recommended for Things to Do with Kids because: An educational and extremely fun afternoon activity for children
Sam’s expert tip: You can access the lower level of the Museum via a side tunnel
Home to the Black Virgin Mary, Montserrat is both a cultural and active day trip, just an hour outside Barcelona. Listen to the renowned boys’ choir sing at mid day while visiting the Monastery and the cave and hiking amongst the gorgeous flora and fauna. This is an ideal day trip if you want to get out of the city for a few hours and kids love it. It’s only 40 minutes by car, so not too far and the mix of hiking, culture and being atop a mountain, is quite alluring for youngsters. If you’re in the mood to get out of Barcelona for a few hours, this is a great option.
Recommended for Things to Do with Kids because: An easy and fun day trip for kids, just a short drive outside of the city
Sam’s expert tip: The boys choir doesn’t on Christmas and other holidays so be sure to check the schedule
If you’re hungry or just feel like browsing rows upon rows and stalls upon stalls of fresh fruit, cured hams, authentic Spanish tapas and pretty much anything you might have a craving for, Barcelona’s Boqueria market should top the check list. Directly off La Rambla, the market is a genuine Barcelona experience; you might even get to see little pigs wearing baseball caps if you go on the right days! If you’re hungry go to the back of the Boqueria where there are several small and rustic but very delicious restaurants. Ra in particular is a great place to dine.
Recommended for Things to Do with Kids because: An eclectic market full of delicious ingredients and treats, a food wonderland for kids
Sam’s expert tip: The front stalls are more expensive than the ones farther in, so if you want to save a few Euros, head closer to the back.
What’s a trip to Barcelona without taking a stroll down La Rambla. This vastly famous walkway is one of the most popular stretches in Europe as well as the world. Starting at the the Colon (Christopher Columbus Statue) by the beach, it goes until Plaza Catalunya dividing the Old City with the Gothic Quarter on one side and the Raval on the other. At the very top is the Eixample neighborhood, where the city expanded at the end of the 19th century. If you’re looking for an entertaining and fun stroll, La Rambla won’t disappoint. Featuring everything from street performers, to merchants selling books, art, portraits and even animals, this is a top Barcelona attraction. Just be sure to keep your purses closed and pockets zipped as it’s also a haven for pickpockets.

Few places offer city views like Montjuic. The name literally means ‘Mountain of The Jews’ and is a former military base in Barcelona. Today it boasts some of the most gorgeous views of the entire city of Barcelona and also holds open air movie festivals during the summer amongst a host of other activities and parties. Check out the Terrace nightclub, especially during summer as there’s always cool and fun events featuring well-known dj’s. Close to Poble Sec and Plaza Espanya, Montjuic is a great place to explore, especially during the evenings. You can get there via cable car, foot or public bus.

Another amazing Gaudi creation that gives the visitor a good view of the city. The site is a mixture of architecture and nature exemplifying the architect’s greatness and the beauty of the city it overlooks. Gaudi’s Park is not only wonderful for a quick history and art lesson, but it brings the stories to life with the over the top designs that are Antoni Gaudi. The park is ideal for children in that it has a mix of grassy areas to run and play as well as cool architectural fixtures to gawk at, take pictures with and play on as well. In addition to the Park, the Gaudi Experience, at the bottom of the hill has recently opened with an exciting ride through the architect’s life as well as hands on touch screens to play with afterwards.
