Wondering where to stay in Gold Coast? This famous destination in Queensland has stolen the hearts of many (including mine) with its fab weather, theme parks and beaches!

I’ve visited the Gold Coast twice now and each time was more magical! I’ve also learned a lot on how to make the best out of your trip there. So follow me as we go through a list of the top neighborhoods and hotels for all budgets, just below!

In short, Surfers Paradise is the best place to stay in Gold Coast as that’s where you’ll find the main attractions and some of the top hotels. But definitely check the other areas as you might find something that’s better suited for you.

I recommend booking your hotels in advance here! This is a super popular holiday destination, so I’d recommend booking your hotels super in advance!

Quick Picks for Your Stay

Here are some interesting accommodation options in and near Broadbeach. This is the most central location in Gold Coast with all the major attractions and hotels, so it should fit every type of traveler, especially those visiting for the first time.

Here’s a map of the 6 best areas where to stay in the Gold Coast, so you can better visualize them:

1. Surfers Paradise – best place for first-timers

Welcome to one of the best places to stay in Gold Coast!

For anyone who doesn’t know, the Gold Coast consists of different areas that cover a total of 70 km (43 mi), but most of the places are within short reach of each other.

Surfers Paradise is where I stayed during my first trip here and loved it! Surfers Paradise is one of the liveliest neighborhoods around, packed with restaurants, bars and lots of attractions.

Its beach (map) is the star of the show and probably where you’ll want to spend your time, chilling, catching some waves (as the name suggests, this really is the paradise of surfers) and swimming.

Right on the boardwalk of the beach, you’ll also find an open-air night market (map) filled with stalls that sell everything from clothes, jewelry and other products.

Some other places that you should check out here are the Soul Boardwalk Shopping Mall (map), the Infinity Attraction where you can immerse yourself in a world of illusions, Hota – Home of the Arts and SkyPoint Observation Deck (map) where you can admire the stunning views!

This neighborhood is also known for its nightlife! Yep, once the sun sets, everyone heads on Cavill Avenue (map), which is known as the heart of all entertainment! Whether you want to enjoy a few drinks or dance all night long, this is the place to be.

If you’re looking for some spots to start the night, head to Finn McCool’s Surfers Paradise (map) or Tune-Up (map).

NOTE: If you are traveling to the Gold Coast during late November/early December, I recommend you check if your dates correspond with Schoolies (highschool graduation parties). Surfers Paradise is the most popular Schoolies destination in the country and is best avoided during those weeks unless you want to party with some rowdy 18-year-olds.

2. Broadbeach – best place to stay for relaxation

Located 4 km (3 miles) away from Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach is a fab place to stay in Gold Coast for those who want a well-rounded experience!

Here you’ll find a bit of everything: amazing beaches, shopping spots, fun attractions and activities! But what’s great about it is that this area has a more relaxed atmosphere, compared to Surfers Paradise where it can get pretty hectic.

Another perk is that Broadbeach is super well-connected by public transport with the other areas. You can easily use the tram to head to Surfers Paradise or other spots. So if you’re traveling without a car, this may be just the place for you!

Although a bit more quiet, the little sister of Surfers Paradise still has much going on, so you will never feel bored.

While here you can hit the beach (map) every day, go shopping in the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and explore all the pubs like Broadbeach Tavern (map).

3. Southport & surrounds – best place near the theme parks

People walking near a silvery statue of a superhero, with a wooden roller coaster and a blue ride in the background under a clear sky.People walking near a silvery statue of a superhero, with a wooden roller coaster and a blue ride in the background under a clear sky.

Located a 10 min drive (or a 30 min bus ride) from Surfers Paradise area, Southport is another amazing neighborhood where I stayed during my second visit to Gold Coast.

This area was perfect for us as we visited all the incredible theme parks in the city (which are super close). So if that’s something you want to do, definitely check out the hotels in Southport that I included below.

In this section I’ll talk about Southport but also the surrounding areas like Main Beach, which is set right near it and where most of the theme parks are.

Since we wanted to visit many theme parks we got the Gold Coast pass which offers you access to 3 parks in the city (these are Sea World, Dreamworld, Wet n Wild). It was super convenient and I highly recommend you get one if you plan on visiting the parks. You can read more about the costs and offers in this post with the best 3 park passes in the Gold Coast

This whole area of Gold Coast was once a central business district, but now it has transformed into a laid-back, easy-going neighborhood where you can chat with locals, grab a nice meal or just enjoy a marvelous sunrise. Besides the theme parks you could also play some golf at the Southport Golf Club (map), hit the Southport Park Shopping Centre (map) and relax on the beach in Phillip Park (map).

Luxury hotel

This is the hotel we stayed at when I visited the Gold Coast the second time. We asked for a room with a view and they were super nice and provided us with one, so definitely email them and ask if you want some nice views, as they may accommodate you with one. The views were so incredible that we could even see the SeaWorld theme park from our room. You’ll also find 2 swimming pools, a fitness center and on-site parking.

4. Coolangatta – trendiest place to stay in Gold Coast

Located a 30 min drive away from Surfers Paradise, Coolangatta, or ‘the sleepy border town’ (as locals love to call it) is one of the coolest places to stay in Gold Coast!

Packed with stunning beaches, rock formation pools, cafes and restaurants, this neighborhood is great for those who have a car or who’d prefer to stay in a less touristy area.

You can also access the more central area by bus and tram and it usually takes around 1h 15min to get there.

PRO TIP: Be careful with using buses though, especially if you need to be somewhere at a certain time. Once, when I was visiting the Gold Coast I had to wait like 30 min for a bus and I was actually going to Brisbane Airport (map) so I needed to get there at a specific time. The worst-case scenario in situations like these you can get a cab, but just be mindful.

As I mentioned the area is pretty tranquil and it’s a great spot for those who want to explore nature along Queensland’s coast. Definitely head to Pat Fagan Park (map) where you can chill on the beach, snap some pics of the gorgeous Snapper Rocks (map) and see the Captain Cook Memorial and Lighthouse (map).

Coolangatta is also a great neighborhood to find affordable Gold Coast accommodation far away from the weekend crowds. The further South you stay, the more peaceful it is. There are fewer restaurants and shops than in other areas, but enough for you to choose from.

Set South of the bustling Surfers Paradise, around a 30 min drive away, Palm Beach and its surrounding area is great for surf lovers!

There are tons of surf schools in this area making it perfect for beginners who want to learn and also more advanced practitioners who just want to catch the amazing waves!

Head to Currumbin Alley Surf School (map) and Surfing Services Australia (map) if you need some lessons!

There are plenty of exciting things to see and do here also for families, such as visiting the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, the Tarrabora Reserve (map) and Cougal Cascade (map).

You can also enjoy the amazing weather on Palm Beach (map), Lillson Beach (map) and Currumbin Beach (map). Most of these beaches have restaurants and bars near them so you can always take a break to eat, relax and then head back to the sandy shores.

Whether you are looking to play in the sand with your kids, learn about Australia’s diverse wildlife or catch some waves, this area is for you!

Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast?

This question often arises among those seeking a beach-based getaway on the sunny coast of Australia. It’s no surprise that this can be a tough decision as both places are popular for their beautiful beaches, sunny skies, and reasonably priced accommodations.

 So what makes them different?

Which destination is a better choice really depends on your individual situation and what is important to you as a traveler.

Here’s a table that can help you make your decision:

Sunshine Coast  Gold Coast
– great for nature lovers (visit places like Kondalilla National Park)
– you can easily reach Fraser Island (the world’s largest sand island) from the Sunshine Coast
– for those who want to enjoy the city’s party culture and nightclub districts
– great for families who want to visit the many theme parks and do kid-friendly activities
