5 Unbeatable Areas + Hotels
Ready for your Caribbean getaway? Then let’s start this guide on where to stay in St. Maarten, a secluded paradise that you’ll never want to leave!
Before we start, you should know that the island is divided between its Northern French side called St. Martin, and its Southern Dutch side, St. Maarten. In this post you’ll find the best neighborhoods on each of those sides, plus a list of the top hotels in all areas, for every budget.
After thorough research I can say that Simpson Bay on the Dutch side is the best area to stay in Sint Maarten. But definitely check the other neighborhoods too, as each has its charm.
Since this is a super popular holiday destination, I’d recommend booking your hotels here in advance, and securing your spot early.
Quick Picks for Your Stay
If you need to take a quick decision and book immediately, I got your back, check this list with the best hotels located in Simpson Bay:
Here is a map to help you visualize where all the different areas and places to stay I will be talking about are located:
Best places to stay on the Dutch side
As I just mentioned, the island is split between the Dutch and French sides. The Dutch side is called Sint Maarten and it’s perfect for those traveling to the island for the first time as it’s home to the cruise terminal and to the international airport (map).
NOTE: Since the island is divided between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the French Republic, there is a border, however it’s an open one and you can cross it freely.
The Dutch side has that typical Caribbean island vibe, lots of amazing resorts and many attractions and things to do!
1. Simpson Bay – best area to stay in St. Maarten for the first time
Simpson Bay, located in the Southwest side of the island (the Dutch Side) is the perfect place for first-time visitors!
Home to the international airport, this area will keep you entertained all day long with its lively center brimming with shops, bars, restaurants, clubs, and casinos! Of course, you’ll also find some fab white beaches and transparent waters surrounded by beautiful green hills!
While here you can try activities like hiking, snorkeling, or even horseback riding at the Seaside Nature Park (map), which is only a 15 min drive away.
NOTE: You can totally rent a car if you want to explore the whole island (you can drive around the entire island in 90 min or even 60 min if there’s no traffic). If you’re not keen on driving, you can also use the buses to get around the Dutch side as there are a few. However they do not run at set times, so you’ll have to plan a bit in advance.
This is also where you’ll find the ferry port (map), which is the starting point of many boat tours that go around the islands surrounding St. Maarten. So if you’re planning to join some day trips, Simpson Bay may be the right place for you.
But one of the main things Simpson Bay is famous for is Maho Beach (map), where you can see the planes swoop into the land above your heads (Princess Juliana International Airport is literally just 5 minutes away).
