NOTE: Holbox Island (or Isla Holbox) is a small island, but not all of it is accessible to visitors. In fact, only the Western tip of the island, known only as Holbox, is populated, and all the areas featured in this article are situated on this part of the island.
1. Holbox Town – where to stay in Holbox for the first time
Holbox Town is the unofficial city center of Holbox, in a central location between East and West Holbox. This lively area of Holbox is teeming with restaurants and bars, it offers many top-rated hotels and provides easy access to the beach, making it the ideal place for your first visit to Holbox.
Did you know that no cars are allowed on the island? Holbox is pedestrian-only. The island has no paved roads, and the primary modes of transportation are golf carts, bicycles, and walking!
To be honest, I absolutely loved that part of my honeymoon! The fact that there were no noises from cars and I could just drive around by bicycle right on the beach was absolutely magical!
If you want to explore outside Holbox Town and feel like that’s too much walking for you, you can rent either a bicycle or a golf cart – you can book both through The Holboxeño.
TIP: Don’t forget to snap a photo with the Holbox Letters, i.e., the Letras Holbox – this will make a great memento from your trip! Also, take some time to walk around the town and admire the vibrant street art that adorns some of the buildings.
In the evenings, I suggest checking out one of the amazing restaurants in Holbox Town – I particularly recommend Las Panchas for some fresh and delicious seafood and Viva Zapata for an authentic Mexican meal.
PRO TIP: Bring enough cash to last you through your Holbox trip! Many local businesses don’t accept card payments (I recommend exchanging for Mexican pesos, but even if you run out, US dollars are also widely accepted)
Finally, I want to share the one downside of staying in Holbox Town – when it rains, the roads get all muddy, so you can either avoid the rainy season (June to October) or embrace the rain – most people just take their shoes off and keep walking.
Now, let’s check out the best Holbox Island hotels in Holbox Town!

2. East Holbox – where to stay in Holbox for the beach
If you’re wondering where to stay in Isla Holbox for the ultimate beach vacation, the ideal choice for you would be East Holbox. Situated directly East of Holbox Town, this part of the island is quieter and more relaxing, perfect if all you want to do is relax on the beach while sipping delicious cocktails.
The main thing to do here is enjoy the beach, and regardless of where you’re staying on this part of the island, you’ll have quick and easy access to Playa Holbox – the most popular beach on the island (it’s not too crowded tho!).
NOTE: Many of the Holbox resorts and hotels in East Holbox are situated directly on the beach, and some even have secluded private beaches. So, if you’re looking for a beach getaway and want to chill on a sun lounger every day without scouring the beach, I recommend booking your stay in one of these seaside hotels.
Just like any other good beach destination, East Holbox abounds with nice beach bars; many of them put up hammocks in the water, and I LOVED this! You can just lay in the hammock with the weather beneath you and the sun above you – it’s perfect. But please-oh-please don’t forget to use sunblock, I go SO burnt!
If you’re looking for some good beach bars in East Holbox, I can recommend Mantarraya Beach Club & Hammocks (map) – it has delicious food and drinks and stunning views.
PRO TIP: Stay on the beach long enough to watch the sunset! The view of the sun setting over the sea in Holbox is truly breathtaking – trust me, you don’t want to miss it!
Kayaking is another must-do activity in Holbox, but there’s an unexpected twist – you should go at night! The waters surrounding Holbox are home to bioluminescent marine life that lights up at night, creating an effect unlike anything you’ve seen before. I recommend seeing this on a guided tour to avoid wandering off to risky waters.
If you’re staying near the beach (or anywhere on the island, for that matter), you should know that there are a LOT of mosquitoes, I don’t think I have ever seen so many in one place in my life tbh! Maybe it was the season? (We visited in July).
But anyway, be sure to bring plenty of mosquito repellent just in case. You should get either a good-quality lotion like this one, but I also like these mosquito-repellent bracelets.

3. West Holbox – where to stay in Holbox for couples
Planning a romantic getaway to Holbox? Well, in that case, book your hotel in West Holbox, located directly West of Holbox Town and home to some of the most romantic hotels on the island. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy the serene atmosphere and get access to an amazing beach, plus a few great restaurants.
The top attraction in West Holbox is Playa Punta Cocos (map), a gorgeous white-sand beach and a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling. The waters are shallow and warm, something to keep in mind if you’re traveling with kids.
NOTE: Seaweeds are not uncommon on the beaches in Holbox, especially on Punta Cocos Beach. They’re not dangerous, so you can just wade through them until you reach clear water, or if you want to snorkel, I recommend going early in the morning before the weeds reach the shore.
In the evenings, you can watch the sea light up at this Bioluminiscencia spot (map) (May to September) or enjoy a nice dinner at La Cabane (map) – both great ideas for a romantic date.
