Once the only means of getting from point A to B, train travel has never been trendier. Of course, the U.S. has some of the best scenic trains. However, companies in other countries are also investing in scenic railways to keep up with demand. Why not add Japan’s most beautiful scenic train rides (home to the world’s only 7-star train) to your bucket list? Or, consider European classics that cut through the dramatic Swiss Alps or wind their way along Germany’s West Rhine River.

Glacier Express, Switzerland

The Glacier Express bills itself as the world’s slowest express train, so savor the panoramic views from St. Moritz to Zermatt as you sip on premium wines from Graubünden. The eight-hour journey includes three Swiss Cantons and 91 tunnels.
You’ll also cross an astounding 291 bridges, many of which are architectural feats given the extreme topography. Tickets start at $180. If you want the five-course regional meal, you’ll have to upgrade to Excellence Class (from $530).
Jungfrau Railways, Switzerland

At $127 for a 45-minute journey, it’s not cheap. Still, this thrilling climb through the Bernese Alps from Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch is worth every penny and ear pop.
